Platinum Jubilee Carnival and Picnic

In collaboration with eight local community groups, Tropical Isles spearheaded a spectacular Carnival procession through De Beauvoir, Hackney on June 3rd 2022, in a vibrant tribute to the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. The procession, which both commenced and concluded at the Rose Lipman Building, invited attendees to partake in the festivities by bringing along picnics and immersing themselves in the party atmosphere. As the Carnival made its way around De Beauvoir Square, it provided ample space for even more communal picnicking and celebration.

Thanks to successful funding from the Arts Council’s Let’s Create Jubilee Fund, Tropical Isles and its partner community groups were able to offer a series of free workshops and masterclasses leading up to the event. These sessions were open to all, providing a fantastic opportunity for individuals to hone their creative skills, regardless of their intention to participate in the Carnival parade itself. The overarching goal was to foster a sense of empowerment within the community, encouraging collaboration with artists and cultural organisations in new and exciting ways. This initiative aimed to unite diverse groups within the community, creating a vibrant, inclusive atmosphere where the thrill and colour of Carnival could be experienced by everyone.

The invitation was open to all to come and craft their own costumes, bunting, or other street decorations in the weeks leading up to the Carnival. With music, dance, and drama workshops on offer, the event was designed to cater to all ages—though children under 12 required adult supervision, there was no upper age limit, ensuring that the Carnival spirit was accessible to everyone.
