Our visit to Betty Layward Primary School as part of the Carnival School Tour was an inspiring and joyful experience. We delivered a whole-school workshop that introduced the children to the rich history of carnival, its cultural roots, and the artistry behind costume design.
The students were fully engaged as they explored the significance of carnival within Black History Month, learning how creativity, identity, and community all come together in this celebrated tradition. Through hands-on costume activities and storytelling, we were able to show them how carnival costumes are made, why they matter, and how they represent pride, freedom, and heritage.
The enthusiasm from the children was incredible — they asked thoughtful questions, expressed their ideas confidently, and connected with the cultural history in a meaningful way. Seeing their excitement reminded us why these workshops are so important: they give young people the chance to learn, celebrate, and value cultures that shape our communities.
Overall, the workshop was a beautiful celebration of creativity, history, and cultural pride, and we were honoured to share the carnival experience with the entire school.
