I am Mayé, a 17-year-old Artist who uses creativity as a way to express my identity, emotions, culture, and lived experiences. As an Art A-Level student, I am constantly exploring new techniques, developing my skills, and expanding my understanding of the wider art world.
My artwork displayed at Hackney Gallery featured a young girl standing proudly in her creative carnival costume. Through this piece, I wanted to capture the significance of heritage and culture in her life. Her natural hair and radiant expression highlight the authenticity of her roots and the confidence that comes from embracing who you are.
Carnival is a space where identity and joy merge, and I aimed to reflect that energy. My intention was to portray the pride, happiness, and cultural celebration that young people experience as they prepare for carnival. Overall, this piece represents the beauty of showcasing a part of yourself — boldly, joyfully, and unapologetically.
